Ugly

An Indian film about the search for a missing child. Rahul is an actor whose career is not working out. He is divorced and can only see his daughter at weekends. One day his daughter Kali disappears while waiting in the car. What follows is not a search story. The film shows this: everyone turns the event to their own account. Her mother relitigates the past with the police commissioner she remarried, that man hates Rahul as an old rival, Rahul's friend looks for an opportunity, and the officers at the station drown the matter in procedure. The most-cited section is exactly that: the scene in which the father tries to give the police a photograph of his daughter. A simple task stretches out for minutes and nobody is thinking about the child. As the narrative goes on, how selfish every character is becomes clear, and the film grants no one a way out. Rahul Bhat, Ronit Roy, Tejaswini Kolhapure and Vineet Kumar Singh are in the cast. Anurag Kashyap directed. Because of a dispute with the censor board the film could not be released in India for a long time and came out late. A hard example for anyone who likes Indian independent cinema and dark crime storytelling. Before you watch, know this: the film leaves sympathy with none of its characters and its ending brings no relief.
