Manmarziyaan

A love triangle set in Amritsar. Rumi plays hockey, is quick to anger and quick to decide. She is with Vicky, who works as a DJ, wants to make music and will not commit to anything. When the relationship comes out in front of the family, Rumi waits for him to propose. Vicky hesitates. Meanwhile the family introduces her to someone through an arranged match: Robbie, a calm banker living in London. Rumi marries Robbie but does not let go of Vicky. From there the film does not try to say who is right; it shows where each of the three is stuck. Robbie's silence is the most argued-about part: the man almost never raises his voice, which looked like maturity to some viewers and passivity to others. The music is by A. R. Rahman, and rather than folding the songs into the narrative the film sets them between scenes. Taapsee Pannu plays Rumi, Vicky Kaushal plays Vicky and Abhishek Bachchan plays Robbie. Anurag Kashyap directed; he is known mostly for crime films and this is one of the times he stepped outside that. An unusual example for anyone who likes relationship drama in Indian cinema. For a viewer wanting a clear resolution, the film proves nobody right and runs past two and a half hours.
