Maaveeran

Sathya draws a comic strip for a newspaper. The character he draws is a brave hero; he himself is a coward. He avoids fights, says nothing in the face of injustice, and moves with his mother and sister into public housing. The building is new but badly built; the plaster falls, the water does not run and those who complain are silenced. Sathya has an accident and hits his head. Then he starts hearing a voice. The voice tells him beforehand what will happen and orders him what to do. It is the voice of the character he draws. Madonne Ashwin writes and directs. Sivakarthikeyan plays Sathya; Aditi Shankar, Saritha and Mysskin are in the cast. The language is Tamil. Its ground is corruption in public housing, which the film sets inside a genre narrative. Who voiced the voice was kept as one of the film's surprises and not revealed in the publicity. The matter it treats is cowardice; the film shows heroism as a necessity rather than a trait of character. The character Mysskin plays is its most interesting side and stands outside the genre shape. It took a strong result at the box office. The narrative does not explain the fantastic element and deliberately leaves it uncertain. Its limit is structure; the second half moves toward a familiar shape and the finale is arranged to commercial expectation. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil cinema and social films on a fantastic ground. Who it is not for: it runs long, the register is uneven, and the last section returns to a shape.
