Missing

The father of an American journalist who disappeared in Chile shortly after the coup in 1973 travels there to look for his son. His daughter in law is already there and the two cannot agree on anything. The film does not build the search as detective work; the narrative is really about the father's trust in his own embassy collapsing step by step. The country is never named and everything is plain. Costa-Gavras directed, with Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. It follows the case of Charles Horman. On release the American State Department issued a statement against it, a lawsuit followed, and it was withdrawn from distribution for a period. A real warning: executions, the identification of bodies and street violence are shown directly. The ending delivers no justice.
