What State of Siege Is About
A country in Latin America, the early seventies. Philip Michael Santore, an American official working for an international agency, is kidnapped by guerrillas. As his interrogation goes on it emerges that he is not there to help but to teach the police methods of interrogation and torture. The guerrillas have to decide whether he lives. Costa-Gavras directed, Yves Montand plays Santore, and the music is by Theodorakis. It comes from the kidnapping and killing of Dan Mitrione in Uruguay in 1970. A screening in the United States was cancelled under political pressure.
