Bruno spent fifteen years as a middle manager at a paper company before being made redundant, and at first he treats it as an opportunity, since his record is good. Two years later he still has nothing, his wife is working two jobs, and the family’s grip on the middle class is coming loose. So he devises a plan that looks, from where he is standing, entirely reasonable: find everyone qualified to compete for his job, and remove them. Adapting Donald Westlake’s novel, Costa-Gavras plays unemployment as black comedy and leaves the real question standing: who made this man.
