Monica, O My Darling

Jayant, an engineer rising fast in a robotics company and about to become engaged to the owner's daughter, is approached by a woman named Monica who wants money. She is squeezing two other men at the firm as well, and the three of them make a plan. Vasan Bala shapes it as a crime comedy where every step goes wrong and the suspense keeps curdling into farce. The source is a Japanese crime novel and the architecture comes from there. Rajkummar Rao is at the centre with Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte around him. It has a pronounced style: music nodding at seventies Indian cinema, hard colour, exaggerated framing. It went out on Netflix. Who it is for: viewers who like black crime comedy and genre play. Who it is not for: anyone after realism, since this is a style exercise from beginning to end.
