An SS officer who learns what is happening in the camps tries to tell everyone he thinks could stop it. The church, the diplomats and the Allies all receive the information and none of them act. The film does not lay the guilt on a single institution; the narrative shows the reasoning of everyone who received the information and treats silence as a decision. Empty trains going out and coming back are used as a recurring image. Costa-Gavras directed, with Ulrich Tukur and Mathieu Kassovitz. It rests on the reports of a real officer. The film's poster became the subject of a court case in France. A real warning: the subject is the Holocaust and the church's silence. It is not graphic to look at; what it describes is heavy.
