What Spotlight Is About

Tom McCarthy never dramatises the crime: no flashback, no scene where an abuser is cornered on camera. The horror arrives through an adult in a chair describing what happened, and names on clippings from a library basement. Knocking on doors, pushing on the phone, filing for documents: that is the action, and anyone waiting for confrontation waits the whole way. The sneakier choice is that the film refuses to supply a villain. It keeps showing that most documents were already public and that the paper had let earlier tips die in its own files, so the most damning scene is in the newspaper archive, not a church. The film’s heaviest blow did not happen that way in life. The paper had published a piece about a list of twenty priests in 1993, but the reporters did not learn this during the investigation. The lawyer MacLeish revealed it while being interviewed for the screenplay, and it was folded in for dramatic effect. Most of what you watch was shot on a rebuilt newsroom floor inside a former Sears building in Toronto. Editing then ran eight months and five whole scenes were cut. Good if you accept that an investigation is mostly document scanning and refused calls. Not for a viewer who needs confrontation and an emotional peak.
