Win Win

A lawyer whose practice is failing also coaches the school wrestling team as a volunteer. He has himself made guardian of an elderly man, puts him in a care home and keeps the stipend. Then the man's grandson turns up, and the boy is a very good wrestler. The film does not let the wrong be forgotten: the man goes on behaving like a decent person while what he did sits there, and the narrative eventually calls it in. Tom McCarthy wrote and directed. Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan lead. Alex Shaffer, who plays the wrestler, was a real state champion. Who it's for: those who like small-scale American independents with moral grey areas. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a straightforward sports film; the matches are not at the centre.
