What A Pure Formality Is About
A man caught running in the woods is taken to a remote police station because he cannot prove who he is. The inspector does not take seriously his claim to be a famous writer, and the questioning lasts all night. The film stays almost entirely in one room and gets its tension from two actors talking. The narrative uses gaps in memory as an interrogation method; the man does not remember what happened either. Giuseppe Tornatore directed, with Gerard Depardieu and the director Roman Polanski in the leads, and a score by Ennio Morricone.
