What The Usual Suspects Is About
The Usual Suspects (1995) is known for its ending, and watching it without knowing that ending is a genuine piece of luck. Nothing here will spoil it. A boat explodes in San Pedro harbour leaving twenty seven bodies and ninety one million dollars in missing drug money. One of the two survivors starts telling an interrogator what happened. The film unfolds inside that account. Christopher McQuarrie won an Oscar for the screenplay and the structure is the reason. Everything you see in flashback arrives through one man's telling, and that single fact governs the entire film. Kevin Spacey also won an Oscar for it. Given the allegations against him, some viewers no longer watch his films comfortably. That is worth knowing in advance. We are not making the decision for you. The atmosphere is pure nineties crime: dim rooms, cigarette smoke, men whose accounts do not quite line up. Good for: puzzle thrillers, crime films, and anyone who enjoys a reveal that rewards a second viewing. It becomes a different film the second time. Less good for: there is violence, and the structure can feel tangled on a first pass. Do not watch it tired or the connections slip away.
