What Apt Pupil Is About
Bryan Singer’s 1998 film follows a high school boy who recognises a former Nazi officer hiding in his neighbourhood. Instead of reporting him he asks him to talk. The relationship changes them both. The film makes the contagion of evil its real subject; the narrative draws tension from mutual blackmail. Ian McKellen leads. It is adapted from a Stephen King novella. Who it’s for: those who like disturbing psychological thrillers. Who it’s not for: viewers who would rather not hear the officer’s account set out in detail.
