In Germany in 1945 five siblings whose parents have been arrested cross the country on foot to reach their grandmother. The eldest is fourteen, and the identity of the young man who joins them makes her question everything. The film keeps the war in the background; the narrative follows a child realising that what she was taught is false, and does not settle it in a conversation. The images are shot very close to landscape and body. Cate Shortland directed, with Saskia Rosendahl, adapting a novel. It is a German and Australian co-production. A real warning: there are dead bodies, hunger, sexual content and the death of a child. The narrative offers no consolation at any point.
