What Sophie Scholl: The Final Days Is About
In Munich in 1943 a brother and sister are caught leaving leaflets at the university. The film covers the six days that follow: arrest, interrogation, trial, execution. The narrative gives its weight to the interrogation room: the officer wants her to survive and keeps offering a way out, and she refuses each time. The film builds no language of heroism; it shows how the decision was made, conversation by conversation. Marc Rothemund directed, with Julia Jentsch in the lead. The script rests on the actual interrogation transcripts found in East German archives. It was nominated for the foreign film Academy Award. A real warning: the film ends with an execution and its last section is very heavy. It is also almost entirely interior and carried by talk.
