Two soldiers parachuted into Czechoslovakia from Britain in 1941 are ordered to kill Reinhard Heydrich, one of the architects of the Final Solution. They plan for months with the local resistance. The ambush takes place on 27 May 1942; Heydrich dies of his wounds, and the Nazis answer with reprisals including the Lidice massacre. Sean Ellis directed and wrote it with Anthony Frewin. Cillian Murphy plays the Slovak soldier Jozef Gabčík and Jamie Dornan the Czech agent Jan Kubiš. It was shot entirely in Prague in the summer of 2015 at the real historical locations. It premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on 1 July 2016 and opened in the US on 12 August 2016. Reviews ran from mixed to positive. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 67 percent; The Guardian called it an intelligent, tough and gripping movie. On a 9 million dollar budget it grossed 5.3 million. Who it is for: viewers who like resistance stories drawn from real events. Who it is not for: anyone expecting heroism. The last half hour shows men cornered in a church being killed, and it reads as an invoice rather than a victory.
