Operation Finale

Buenos Aires, 1960. Fifteen years after the war, Mossad learns that Adolf Eichmann is living in Argentina with his family under a false name. A small team goes to take him alive to Israel; they want a trial, not an execution in the street. The capture turns out to be the easy part. The hard part is persuading Eichmann to sign, of his own will, the document needed to get him aboard a plane. That falls to Peter Malkin, and the two men spend days facing each other in one room. Chris Weitz directed from a screenplay by Matthew Orton. Oscar Isaac plays Malkin and Ben Kingsley plays Eichmann, with Melanie Laurent, Lior Raz, Nick Kroll and Haley Lu Richardson. Isaac is also one of the producers. One of the sources is Eichmann in My Hands, written by Peter Malkin with Harry Stein. It opened on 29 August 2018. The budget was 22 million dollars and the box office stopped at 18 million. The reviews converged on one point: the power comes from the two-hander between Isaac and Kingsley in that room, while the script preserves Eichmann's mystique as an office manager rather than finding a way into his interior life. Who it is for: viewers who like true-story espionage and scenes carried by two actors talking. Who it is not for: anyone expecting action. This is a persuasion scene more than an abduction thriller, and the pace is deliberately slow.
