Oleg Kovalov What A Room and a Half Is About
The film tells the life of the poet Joseph Brodsky, mixing the real with the imagined. The childhood of the poet who was sent into exile in America in 1972, the room and a half he shared with his parents in Leningrad, the ordinary texture of the post-war years and his beginning to write appear in turn. The account does not build a straight biography; it imagines a journey the poet never made, a return home by ship, and animated passages run between the scenes. Alisa Freyndlikh and Sergei Yursky, as his parents, carry the life of that household in full detail. Andrey Khrzhanovsky’s hundred and thirty minute Russian film was completed in 2009; Grigoriy Dityatkovskiy takes the lead.
