A Sad and Beautiful World

Cyril Aris's 2025 Lebanese film covers a relationship spanning thirty years. Nino and Yasmina find and lose each other repeatedly, and each meeting falls in another of the country's periods of crisis. The idea is the choice between loving and staying. Both consider building a family in the country, but economic collapse, an explosion and a wave of emigration keep postponing the decision. The narrative shows this not as background but as the direct condition of the relationship. Aris had taken up the crises in Lebanon before. The tone sits between comedy and sadness; the shifts of period are conveyed through music and place. The director Mounia Akl appears in the cast as a performer. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Arab cinema and long-arc relationship narratives. Who it's not for: viewers who need a happy ending; the film shows the cost before leaving the decision to the audience.
