What A Simple Story Is About
The war is over. Sasha Potapova has been left a widow. So have many of the women around her. Living without someone to lean on is hard. Love and affection are missing too. But no one has ever seen her crying or in despair. The strength of her character draws the notice of the villagers. They elect her chairwoman of the collective farm. The weight of the work and its worries push her own loss aside. Then one day she falls in love. The love is not returned, and is a happy one all the same. Nonna Mordyukova and Mikhail Ulyanov take the leads, with Vasiliy Shukshin also in the cast, in Yuri Yegorov’s Soviet film of 1960.
