What Once Upon a Time Twenty Years Later Is About
In Yuri Yegorov’s 1981 Soviet film, a class gathers twenty years after leaving school, on the set of a television programme. The host puts the same question to each of them: what have you achieved, and what comes next? When it reaches Nadezhda Kruglova the answer is not one the format was built for, because she has ten children. The film treats this neither as heroism nor as sacrifice; it is interested in how a life gets counted and by whom. Natalya Gundareva plays her and won a special prize for the performance at the festival in Varna, and the film took the main award at Avellino.
