What A Soul Haunted by Painting Is About
At the beginning of the twentieth century Yuliang leaves a brothel to become the second wife of an official, then starts learning to paint in Shanghai. When the school is closed for working from nude models she goes to Paris, wins a prize there for a nude self portrait, and becomes the first Chinese woman painter recognised in Europe. Huang Shuqin made the film with Gong Li from the life of a real painter, Pan Yuliang. Less an artist’s biography than the story of a woman her own country would never let out from under her past.
