What A Touch of Larceny Is About
Max Easton, a bored British naval officer at a desk in the Admiralty, falls in love with Virginia Killain, an American engaged to another man. To find the money that would give her the life she is used to, he devises an odd plan: he will disappear for a while, leaving the impression that he has taken naval secrets and defected to the Soviets, and once the newspapers print it he will reappear and sue them all for libel. The plan is flawless on paper, but Easton finds that things do not go by his reckoning. Guy Hamilton’s ninety three minute British comedy was adapted from Paul Winterton’s novel The Megstone Plot. James Mason plays Easton, Vera Miles plays Virginia and George Sanders his friend; it was completed in 1960.
