A View from the Bridge

Eddie Carbone is a longshoreman in Brooklyn. His marriage to Beatrice is an unhappy one. He carries an attachment he cannot admit even to himself towards Catherine, the niece they raised from childhood. Two brothers come into the house, Marco and Rodolpho, both there illegally. Catherine falls in love with Rodolpho. Eddie cannot bear it and reports the illegal immigrants to the authorities. The film builds a neighbourhood story as a closed tragedy. A feeling that cannot be spoken pulling a whole family apart is the real subject. Raf Vallone and Maureen Stapleton take the leads, with Jean Sorel also in the cast. Sidney Lumet’s hundred and ten minute film, a joint French and Italian production, was completed in 1962.
