What A Woman Rebels Is About

In Mark Sandrich’s 1936 film, Katharine Hepburn plays Pamela, a woman in late nineteenth-century England who intends to make her own life and has no plan to marry, and who is opposed by Victorian morality and an autocratic father in roughly equal measure. It comes from Netta Syrett’s novel Portrait of a Rebel. The film is openly a feminist period piece and failed for exactly that reason at the time: it lost money and was one of the run of Hepburn flops that had exhibitors calling her box office poison. It reads very differently now. Herbert Marshall plays opposite her.
