What Salt of the Earth Is About
At a zinc mine in New Mexico, Mexican-American workers strike over unsafe conditions and over being paid less than white workers. When a court order stops the men from picketing, the women take the line and the men are left with the house, the laundry and the children. The film recounts a real strike from 1951, and most of the parts are played by the miners and their families who made it. Its makers were blacklisted filmmakers, its Mexican lead was deported during production, and it was almost never shown in the United States. It is preserved in the national film registry today.
