Matewan, a coal town in West Virginia, 1920. The union man Joe Kenehan tries to hold the three groups together in one action, and his real fight is not with the company but with the hostility the workers carry towards each other. It comes from a real event; what happened at Matewan is one of the known days in American labour history.
