Men with Guns

Doctor Fuentes, close to retirement, decides to find the students he trained years ago. He had trained them to work in poor villages and counted it the best work of his life. The further he goes from the city towards the mountains, the fewer of them he finds. The people he meets do not want to say what happened. The doctor realises he has never known his own country. John Sayles wrote and directed the film almost entirely in Spanish and indigenous languages. The country is never named; Sayles built the story to fit many things that have happened across Latin America at once. Federico Luppi plays the doctor. The telling shows not the violence but the silence left behind it: nobody talks, because the ones who talked were killed.
