A Writer's Odyssey

Lu Yang's film links two worlds. Guan Ning, played by Lei Jiayin, is a father who has been searching for his abducted daughter for six years, and Tu Ling, played by Yang Mi, hires him for a strange job: kill a fantasy novelist. The reason is that events in the writer's invented world act directly on the real one, and the fate of Lord Redmane in the novel is bound to the lifespan of a corporate boss outside it. It opened over Chinese New Year in 2021 and took roughly a hundred and sixty million dollars worldwide. The visual effects, produced under Ning Hao's supervision, became a showcase for where Chinese cinema's technical capacity stood at that moment, and the battle sequences inside the novel drew particular praise. The weakness is the people. A structure that keeps shuttling between two layers never settles on anyone long enough, and the father's story, which is supposed to carry the emotional weight, ends up in shadow. Who it is for: viewers who enjoy large-scale Chinese fantasy and worlds built out of visual effects. Who it is not for: anyone looking for character depth or airtight narrative logic.
