J.K. runs a hotel in a scenic part of the country. One day he comes to the aid of a young woman who is drunk. She is a politician’s daughter and her name is Aarti. J.K. keeps the incident to himself. When she recovers the two of them fall in love. They marry in a small ceremony and have a daughter. The distance between them grows with time. In the end they decide to separate. Years pass. Aarti is now an established politician. The two of them meet again by chance. What was between them is still there. But Aarti does not want her name attached to the word separated. The woman politician in the film was taken to resemble the prime minister of the day. After more than twenty weeks in cinemas it was banned during the emergency. Gulzar admitted the film had been made with the prime minister in mind only after her election defeat in 1977. Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen appear in the hundred and thirty three minute film, an Indian production Gulzar finished in 1975.
