What Angoor Is About

Two sets of identical twins are separated as children after an accident. Years later they all end up in the same city and nobody can tell who is who: wives address the wrong husband, servants obey the wrong master, shopkeepers hand goods to the wrong customer. As the confusion compounds, everyone starts to conclude that the person in front of them has lost their mind. Gulzar's film goes back to Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors by a winding route: through a Bengali novel, a 1963 Bengali film, and a 1968 Hindi one before arriving here. Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma each play two parts and carry the entire comedy on timing alone. It is still regarded as one of the best loved comedies in Indian cinema.
