OMG: Oh My God!

Kanji Lalji Mehta, played by Paresh Rawal, runs a shop in Mumbai selling religious statues, does not believe in God, and treats the whole thing as commerce. When an earthquake destroys his shop the insurers refuse to pay, citing the act of God clause. So Kanji does precisely that: he goes to court and sues God, naming the clergy as the defendants. Akshay Kumar turns up as Krishna. The film's strength is that it attacks the religion business rather than religion. The courtroom scenes use scripture against the other side and the argument runs on legal rather than theological ground, which is how a film with such a hard subject reached a wide audience. The source is the Gujarati stage play Kanji Virudh Kanji, itself inspired by the Australian film The Man Who Sued God. It opened on 28 September 2012 and took a hundred and forty-nine crore against a budget of twenty. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian satire and courtroom argument. Who it is not for: anyone uncomfortable with religious institutions being criticised outright.
