What He Who Gets Slapped Is About
A scientist has his discoveries stolen by the baron who funds him, then his wife, and finally a slap in front of everyone. He abandons everything and joins a Paris circus, where his act is simple: he is slapped on stage and the audience laughs. He performs the worst humiliation of his life every night, for money. Lon Chaney's clown is one of the most painful figures in silent cinema. Adapted from Leonid Andreyev's play, the film is remembered as the first production made from start to finish by the newly formed MGM, with Norma Shearer and John Gilbert both very young in it.
