What The Wind Is About
From the last years of silent cinema, seventy-six minutes long. Letty comes from Virginia to her cousin's ranch in West Texas, where the wind never stops and the sand gets into everything. Her cousin's wife does not want her there and three local men want her far too much. Letty is pushed into a marriage she does not want, and loneliness and the wind slowly take her apart. Sjöström uses the sandstorm almost as a character, and Lillian Gish's face says more than any title card. The studio disliked the bleak original ending and had it changed.
