The Girl from the Marsh Croft

Helga, from a poor croft at the edge of the marsh, testifies in court against the father of her child. When he prepares to swear a false oath, she withdraws her claim: she does not want the sin of perjury laid on him. That one decision fixes how the whole district sees her. The film is not interested in a fallen woman. It is interested in where moral advantage lies: Helga loses her claim and not her honour, and the film diminishes everyone who judges her, one by one. She then enters a farmer's household as a servant, where the same test is set again. The form is early Swedish cinema: natural exteriors, plain playing, few intertitles, and landscape carrying the characters' condition. Victor Sjöström directed, from a story by Selma Lagerlöf. His Lagerlöf adaptations built the international standing of Swedish cinema in that period, and this is among the first major examples. Greta Almroth plays Helga and Lars Hanson the farmer. Who it is for: viewers curious about Nordic silent film and Lagerlöf adaptations. Who it is not for: anyone expecting complex narration. The story is linear, its moral is explicit, and to modern eyes the closing section resolves far too neatly.
