Whoever dies on the last night of the year must drive death's carriage for a year. A drunken man spends that night in a graveyard. The film creates its ghost images with double exposure, applied with extraordinary precision for the period; the carriage passes through walls and enters the sea. The narrative proceeds in flashback and shows one by one what he did to his family. Victor Sjostrom directed and starred, adapting Selma Lagerlof's novel.
