What The Golem: How He Came into the World Is About
In sixteenth century Prague, when an order comes to expel the Jewish quarter, Rabbi Löw animates clay and makes a protector. The creature does the job, and then, once it is used to serve one man's wishes, it goes past control. Paul Wegener directed and played the creature, with Carl Boese as co-director. What is most discussed now is the design: Hans Poelzig's crooked walls, pointed doorways and narrow streets established the visual language of later horror. The creature's heavy walk and the sign on its forehead were repeated in dozens of films. It is a creation story and equally a story about responsibility, since the maker does not know what the made thing will do. Who it is for: viewers curious about silent cinema and the origins of horror. Who it is not for: anyone wanting pace, since this moves at the tempo of its period.
