I Lost My Body

A severed hand escapes a laboratory and sets out across Paris to find its owner. Along the way flashbacks tell us whose it is: Naoufel, who lost his parents in a car accident in Morocco and now delivers pizza in France. Jérémy Clapin directed, from Guillaume Laurant's novel Happy Hand. Trying to get close to Gabrielle, whose voice he first heard through an intercom, Naoufel takes a job in a carpentry workshop and loses his hand there in an accident. The structure ties the two lines together: the hand moves forward through the present while the story opens backwards. It played the Critics' Week at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and became the first animated film to win the section's Grand Prize. Rotten Tomatoes has 97 percent of 89 reviews positive with an 8.1 average. It won César awards and an Annie, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards. Netflix took worldwide rights outside France, Turkey, China and Benelux. Who it is for: viewers who like adult animation and unconventional narrative structures. Who it is not for: children. It is animated, but the subject is grief, disability and obsession.
