The Invite

Joe and Angela's marriage is nearly over. The neighbours on the floor above make noise at night; the sounds are unmistakable and the neighbours' relationship is clearly going well. Joe suggests inviting them to dinner. Angela does not want to and agrees anyway. The evening begins. The talk is polite, then personal, then direct; everything that should not be said at a table gets said, and the night goes somewhere nobody planned. Olivia Wilde directs and plays one of the leads. Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton take the other parts. The screenplay is by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. The film is an English language remake of Cesc Gay's Spanish film Sentimental. The structure is almost entirely in one setting; the narrative is confined to one flat and one night, and the tension rises without moving. The form it uses is farce; the characters behave extravagantly and what they say is serious. It was shown at the Sundance Film Festival on 24 January 2026 and drew favourable reviews. It opened in a limited number of cinemas in America on 26 June 2026, distributed by A24. Who it is for: viewers who like single setting talk films and sharp acting work. Who it is not for: little happens, the register is close to theatre in places, and none of the characters is likeable.
