Jumbo

Don is a boy who is teased constantly for his size. He has lost his parents, and the only thing left to him from them is an illustrated storybook his mother wrote. He wants to stage that story at the school's summer festival. The book is stolen, and Don sets out to get it back with the help of Meri, a ghost he meets at night in the cemetery. Ryan Adriandhy directs, in his first film, from a screenplay written with Widya Arifianti. It was produced by Visinema Studios, Springboard Entertainment and Anami Films. It opened in March 2025, over the Eid weekend, and did something Indonesian cinema had never seen. Across a sixty three day run it sold roughly 10.07 million tickets, becoming the most watched Indonesian film ever, and passed Malaysia's Mechamato Movie as the highest grossing animated film in Southeast Asia. Worldwide it took around 26 million dollars. The significance is not only commercial. Indonesia had gone a long time without producing domestic animated features; Jumbo changed the expectation of investment in that sector. Grief sits at the centre of the story and the film does not hide it from a young audience. Don's bond with his mother is told entirely through the book. Who it is for: anyone looking for family animation and curious about the new strand in Asian animation. Who it is not for: the narrative is crowded with supporting characters, and the emotional register climbs very high in the final section.
