The Super Frugal Family

Danial Rifki's 2025 Indonesian film begins with the collapse of a family living on debt. When Tony loses his job the family's real position emerges: instalments, credit cards and the emptiness under a showy life. They suddenly have to economise, and the film draws its comedy from how badly they manage the transition, with giving up habits, explaining the situation to neighbours and protecting the children's standing at school each becoming a problem in turn. The story takes direct aim at the pressure to consume and the middle class anxiety about appearances. The director keeps to the family-film shape and resolves things through reconciliation, with the debt overcome by acting together rather than by any realistic difficulty. The tone is light and audience-friendly. Who it's for: viewers who like family comedy and Indonesian cinema. Who it's not for: anyone expecting economic hardship to be treated seriously; the film makes the solution easy.
