My Daughter Is a Zombie

Jung-hwan trains wild animals at a zoo; he seems gruff but is devoted to his daughter. His teenage daughter Soo-ah is obsessed with dance and the two bicker constantly. The zombie virus sweeping the world infects Soo-ah too. Jung-hwan does not give up on her; he takes her to a quiet seaside village called Eunbong-ri and tries, using the methods he knows from animal training, to get her behaving like a person again. The people in the village do not know. Pil Gam-seong turns the zombie genre into family comedy. The narrative uses concealment rather than fear; the real tension comes not from the virus but from when the neighbours will notice. In the final section the tone leaves comedy behind. Cho Jung-seok plays the father and Lee Jung-eun the grandmother. The film adapts a webtoon. Who it's for: Viewers who like Korean comedy, genre-blending films, and father-and-daughter narratives. Who it's not for: The emotional peaks are openly constructed and the final section runs long. Anyone expecting horror from the zombie genre will not find it.
