What Abandoned Is About
A woman whose sister has vanished in Los Angeles goes first to the city offices and then to the police, and gets nothing from either; the only person who takes her seriously is a crime reporter on a local paper. The further the two of them dig, the more the trail points at a crooked private detective and, behind him, a black-market baby ring. Black-market adoption was a real and documented problem in postwar America, and the picture takes its tension straight from the news pages rather than inventing a villain. Dennis O’Keefe and Gale Storm head the cast with Jeff Chandler and Raymond Burr, and the Universal production is done in seventy-nine minutes.
