What Detective Story Is About
One day inside the detective squad room of a New York precinct. Through it pass a first-time embezzler, a pair of burglars, a frightened shoplifter, lawyers, informers. At the centre stands Detective McLeod, a man who grants nobody a second chance and believes the line between decent and criminal is exact. Then something surfaces in his own wife's past, and that line runs straight through his house. Wyler adapted Sidney Kingsley's play and keeps almost all of it in the one room without ever letting it feel like theatre.
