What Wuthering Heights Is About
An orphan taken in at a Yorkshire farm grows up with the daughter of the house. She marries someone else to rise in class, and he returns years later as a wealthy man. The film covers only the first half of the novel and leaves out the second generation entirely, so the revenge is far shorter than in the book. The photography is dark and the moor built in the studio carries the atmosphere. William Wyler directed, with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. It won an Oscar for cinematography. Before watching: if you have read the novel, half the story is not here and the ending is changed. The harshness of the characters is also markedly softened.
