What Jane Eyre Is About
Jane Eyre, orphaned and worn down by a harsh boarding school, arrives at Thornfield Hall as a governess. Rochester, who owns the house, is dark, bad-tempered and always implying something; between them there grows first a habit of arguing and then something else. But there is something upstairs that Jane does not know about. This 1943 version compresses the novel's first half and pushes the gothic forward: fog, candles, shadow. Bernard Herrmann wrote the score, and a very young Elizabeth Taylor plays Helen.
