Forever and a Day

During the Second World War the American Gates Trimble Pomfret comes to London. What he means to do is sell the house his family left him. The city is under air raids at the time. Leslie Trimble, who lives in the house, tries to talk him out of selling. To do it she tells him the hundred and forty year history of the place and how the two families became bound together. So the account moves back and forth between the present and the past. The work is a wartime film made by many directors together with a large cast. A house turning into the history of a country sits at the centre of the story. Edmund Goulding, René Clair and Frank Lloyd are among those who directed it. The hundred and four minute American film was completed in 1943.
