What Dark Victory Is About
Judith Traherne is young, rich and takes nothing seriously, filling her days with parties and horses. Headaches and a hand that will not hold things send her to a doctor, and the diagnosis is a brain tumour. She has the surgery, believes she is cured, falls in love with the surgeon and marries him. Then she reads her own file. The last stretch of the film rests on her decision to tell nobody. Bette Davis refuses to play for pity; the point is that she chooses how to behave knowing exactly what is coming.
