What Morgiana Is About

Morgiana is adapted from Aleksandr Grin's 1929 novel "Jessie and Morgiana"; when Czechoslovak authorities banned depicting the schizophrenia in the story as "sadomasochistic," director Juraj Herz solved it by having a single actress, Iva Janžurová, play both sisters, Klára and Viktorie. The illusion, built through acting, costume, makeup, and camera trickery, is so convincing that most viewers don't realize it's the same actress until halfway through. The film's title actually refers to Viktorie's Siamese cat. Who it's for: anyone curious about a visually bold post New Wave Czechoslovak cult film built around a single actress playing two opposing sisters. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with indirect storytelling techniques shaped under real censorship pressure.
