Oil Lamps

The year is 1900. Stepha is the thirty year old daughter of a wealthy couple. She is lively and full of life. She agrees to marry her cousin Paul. Paul is an officer in the Austrian army and has run up large debts. After the wedding he refuses to work. He does not consummate the marriage either. His health then steadily declines. She enters the marriage of her own accord. What Paul owes stands behind the whole thing. Marie Rosůlková and Ota Sklenčka are also in the cast. The account moves through the inside of that marriage. The film was adapted from a novel. Iva Janžurová and Petr Čepek take the leads in Juraj Herz’s Czechoslovak film of 1971.
